While a 4×4 vehicle with large wheels and a body lift is beneficial in any off-road environment, a standard 4×4 vehicle can handle Fraser Island’s sandy tracks.
I have to admit, I felt a bit uneasy leaving our well-equipped Landcruiser behind for this trip and taking our standard Mitsubishi Triton instead. However, navigating Fraser Island in a standard 4×4 was manageable. With lowered tyre pressures and firm sand tracks thanks to recent rain—and drawing on our off-road driving experience—we had no trouble tackling the island’s terrain.
In saying that, track conditions can vary greatly depending on the weather and season—rain may firm up the sand, while heat can make it softer. Additionally, previous vehicle traffic can create bumpy sections. Some sections of the tracks may have deep sandy wheel ruts, causing the vehicle’s underside to ‘bottom out’ along the sand. To navigate these challenges, driver experience and essential recovery tools such as adjusted tyre pressures, traction boards, and snatch straps are highly recommended for driving on sand.
How Do You Tackle Soft Sand When 4-Wheel Driving Fraser Island?
To drive in soft sand on Fraser Island, your vehicle must be engaged in 4WD—high 4 and have lowered tyre pressures to increase grip in the sand – while maintaining a steady forward momentum. If the soft sand slows your momentum and your wheels start to spin, stop and lower air pressures, and if necessary, use traction boards like MaxTrax. Low tide is ideal for driving on Fraser Island, offering an expansive, firm beach. However, be cautious of wash-outs from the outgoing tide and the freshwater creeks. 4-wheel driving Fraser Island is still achievable at high tide, though you must drive on the dry, softer sand and take the headland bypass tracks – which are soft sand and bumpy. If travelling to the northern section of the Island (beyond Waddy Point), Ngkala Rocks is passable by experienced 4WDers. The pass can be driven around on the ocean side at low tide.

Time is essential to consider when visiting and 4-wheel driving Fraser Island. Fraser Island is large, in fact it is 140,000 acres, 122 km long and approximately 22 km wide. Allow 30 minutes to drive across the island from Kingfisher Bay Resort to 75 Mile Beach. Driving as far as Champagne Pools past Indian Head (with site seeing stops) will take approximately 3 hours (one way). This is a great day trip on Fraser Island. However, should time be on your side, booking a campground or accommodation is an excellent option to explore more of the Island’s tracks and natural features.

Eli Creek: Cool off in the clear flowing fresh water of Eli Creek. Don’t forget to pack your floatie to enjoy a relaxing float along the fern-lined creek.
S.S. Maheno Shipwreck: Fraser Island has a shipwreck that is worth a look when driving by. The ship was driven ashore during a cyclone in 1935.
