Tips for Making Frying Pan Pizza: Easy Camping Dinner
So, how do you cook pizza if you do not have an oven? We know cooking appliances are limited when travelling and camping, though a gas or induction stove is necessary. Often, we use a camp oven for cooking pizza, using hot coals, though on some occasions, weather factors, fire restrictions, or camp area rules influence how you can cook. By becoming adaptable and versatile to various elements while travelling and cooking, I discovered this successful Pizza in a frying pan, cooked on a gas stove!
The key is finding a flatbread that will fit your frying pan! I have used nan bread, souvlaki flat bread, pitta bread, and pocket bread; you get the idea…Cook the Pizza over the lowest stove heat using a lid, a large bowl, or aluminium foil fitted over the frying pan to hold in the heat, creating an oven effect.

Utensils You Will Need
- Good-sized frying pan that fits your pizza base.
- Gas stove or induction cooktop.
- Large lid, bowl or aluminium foil to cover the frying pan.
- Egg flip (optional, to lift out the Pizza).
- Ingredients below.
TRAVEL TIP: Consider cutting up and preparing your topping ingredients and placing them in a container, ready to take with you on your journey.
Ingredients:
- Pizza base: Flat bread, turkish bread or small pizza bases to fit in your frying pan.
- Pizza sauce.
- Grated pizza cheese.
- Toppings of your choice: Tomato, capsicum, salami, ham, roast vegetables, pineapple, baby spinach, herbs, olives, mushroom.
4 Steps to an Easy Camping Dinner
Step #1 – Spread pizza sauce on your base and sprinkle with cheese. Top this with the desired toppings, then finish with more cheese.
Step #2 – Oil the frying pan and heat. Place the stove on LOW heat.
Step #3 – Place the prepared pizza into the pan. Cover with aluminium foil and a large lid or bowl to capture the heat, creating an “oven” effect. Check the base does not burn; turn off the heat if needed while keeping the pizza covered.
Step #4 – Cook the pizza on low heat for 10 – 15 minutes until the cheese melts and the base is toasted. Remove the pizza from the pan, slice it, serve it, and most of all, ENJOY!
