Tasmania Road Trip 14-day Itinerary

Day 1 – Hobart to Mount Field National Park – 83 km

Drive through farmland towards Mount Field National Park, Mount Field Campground. Mount Field National Park offers riverside camping with amenities block. Access the information centre before exploring the walking trails. Walk through memorising tree ferns and tall eucalypt, and spot Pademelons before arriving at stunning Russell Falls, a part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. Stay for two nights.

Day 3 – Derwent Bridge, Lake St Clair Tourist Park – 127 km

Ascend to the central highlands and through Tasmania’s Wilderness Areas. Lake St Clair offers a tranquil lakeside setting. Stay one night.

Day 4 – Strahan, 129 km

Continue the scenic drive towards the western side of Tasmania. There are several exploration options along this stretch: Franklin River Nature Trail, Donaghys Hill Nature Trail, and stop for a leisurely walk to Nelson Falls. Experience Gordon River Cruises from Strahan to experience the untouched wilderness of western Tasmania. Pull into Strahan Beach Tourist Park. Stay for two nights.

Day 6 – Cradle Mountain, 145 km

Explore the scenic Cradle Mountain Lake St Clair National Park. Gain information on walking trails at the visitor centre to suit your fitness level. Also, choose from horse riding, quad tours, canoeing, fishing, or visit Devils @ Cradle. Stay at Discovery Parks Cradle Mountain for two nights.

Day 8 – Myrtle Park Camping & Recreation Ground 178 km

Stop at Cataract Gorge Reserve in Launceston, an exciting place to explore walking trails, Alexandra Suspension Bridge, Gorge Scenic Chairlift and the Duck Reach Hydro Power Station. Continue to Myrtle Park Camping & Recreation Reserve, a picture-perfect spot lined by a small river. Stay for one night. Note: Check the campground website for summer camping season dates.

Day 9 – Binalong Bay, Bay of Fires Conservation Area, 139 km

Take time to explore the contrasting colours of the Bay of Fires Conservation area! Be amazed by the many stunningly scenic headlands and bays. Enjoy beachside camping and choose from a number of campgrounds: Cosy Corner (south), Giants Lagoon, or Dora Point Camping Area. Stay for two nights.

Continue the Tasmania Road Trip to Cape Tourville, Freycinet National Park.

Day 11 – Coles Bay, 124 km

Yes, there is more to explore! Walk to the lookout of Wineglass Bay, a part of Freycinet National Park. Keen hikers can continue the trail to Wineglass Bay and Hazards Beach. Alternatively, relax at Honeymoon Bay, get out on the water for sea kayaking, or continue exploration to Cape Tourville Lighthouse and Lookout. Day 13 – Port Arthur, 199 km

Day 14 – Return to Hobart 193 km
